1978 50 hp mercury outboard

A friend gave me a 16 foot starcraft boat with a 50hp mercury on it.

I ordered an OEM manual from mercury and what to get this boat in the water this year.

It sounds like a 1978 motor is worth fixing based on the price of a new one and from reading other posts on Iboats. Are there some repairs I should leave for the marina and not attempt myself?

I am a little intimidated about the repair process because it is all new to me.

Get your manual first. Look it over and and look at the procedures you want and need to do. Can you do them? Do you understand the procedures? Do you have the tools? That is what is going to answer your questons.
If you have a problem with something and have the manual, it's a lot easier for people to explain what to do.
