1978 115 mercury

I have a 1978 mercury having power problems. In neutral you can rev the engine right up, but put it in gear, give it full throttle and it dies. It will run at 1/2 throttle but not very good. Changed feul tanks and hoses, drained carb bowls and changed feul pump diagrams need help !!!!!

Make sure you have spark on all the cyls, a switch box or 1 side of the stator can go bad causing the egine to run on 3 cyls

If it is a 78 it will have only 1 switchbox, 1 coil and a distributor. You said you drained the carbs, did you take them off and thoughly clean them. Your problem is common when one or more carbs are gummed up. Revving an engine in neutral doesn't require much fuel. Try enrichening the idle mixture screws a 1/4 turn and see what happens. It could be dirt in the idle/off idle circuts of the carb.
