I have a 175 that holds 5 psi of water presure at idle and 15 psi at anything above 2000 rpm but will not pee at idle replaced poppet valve to solve this blow compressed air through pee hole it pees fine when rpms are increased but not at idle talked to a few of the local shops here and they said this is normal for the older big motors both t-stats have also been replaced if I take the popet valve out and use water hose with water and put it where the popet valve goes it still dosnt come out the pee hole does this sound right

Somewhat right, but I think your pressures are a bit low... But a 1977 motor, I'm not sure about...

I think you should have at least some spurts of water from the pee hole at idle even if the stats haven't opened yet.. There should be a bypass...

Are you sure that you have all the proper parts in place that go with the poppet valve...
There is a grommet and carrier that's fixed to the hole in the block! Were they both in place for the poppet to make a good seal?

poppet

That's normal on most of their V-6s. It only pees if a thermostat is open. Stupid Mercury Engineering! Pee indicators SHOULD pee all the time a pump is pumping so you know it's pumping. Otherwise, what's the point? I guess they missed that little detail in Outboard Design 101.

I have drilled a small hole in each thermostat to allow some pee water to pass. Otherwise it doesn't sound like you have a problem. But if your water pump hasn't been serviced within the last 5 years, it's overdue.
