hey guys new here to the boards and just had a few questions...i just bought a boat with a 1977 1150 115hp merc outboard...but I wanted to see if the thing would run before dumping a ton of money into it

I am trying to get the motor started but dont have the control box and wiring harness thats goes inside the engine is there any way to jumpstart the motor? i tried jumping it from the solenoid and the fly wheel turns and it wants to start but the spark plugs arent getting any spark...is this because the wires in the engine arent going anywhere? any answer would be appreciated!

Sean;

Are you saying that there are no wires at all on the engine or just that there are no wires leading from the front of the boat to the outside of the engine?

Yeah the wires in the engine are not connected to anything up front

So, the engine has the internal wiring harness, correct?

This is the parts listing for your engine:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/463.cfm

Click on: STARTER MOTOR, STARTER SOLENOID, RECTIFIER & WIRING HARNESS
and item 1 is the engine internal wiring harness. Which one you have depends on the s/n of your engine.

You say that you do not have the controls or the long external harness which goes to the control box. Are you going to get these?

Harnesses can be had here:

http://www.cdielectronics.com/

Look under Wiring Harnesses but you should know what control box you are getting first.

No the engine does not have the internal wiring haness which I why I'm thinking the engine won't jump from the solenoid....sorry I'm new to all this so I'm making it extremely confusing. I was wondering If there was a way to jump it from the solenoid if there isn't an internal wiring harrness on the engine?

I really cannot understand why you want to do this without the internal harness but it is your engine.

For safety sake and to protect your engine, I cannot continue to assist you. I'm sorry.

Maybe others will chime in with their ideas.

Good luck!

I was just hoping to see if it would start up...I don't want to end up dumping a ton of money into it(control box, wiring harness etc...)and come to find out the carborators won't fire and the engine is junk. So your saying to at least get the internal engine wiring harness then I can jump it from the solenoid?

Only three things are real important to determine hte condition of that motor. Compression, Spark and gearcase. The rest of the stuff is cheap to fix, if it needs it.

Remove the spark plugs and spray some oil into the carb throats and plug holes. Now using some jumper cables, jump the starter directly. Connect one jumper cable from neg battery post to the engine casing or block. Now connect the positive battery post to a jumper cable and touch the conection on the bottom side of the starter body. The starter should tuen and you may take a compression test.

Now open the gearcase drain screw and observe the gear oil. It should be clear brown like motor oil and stink. If it is milky you have a water leak. If the drain plug has chunks of metal, the gears are likely damaged. Filings are OK.

Post back results and if they are positive, I can help you determine if you have spark.

Re: 1977 Mercury 1150 115hp outboard

The past year I have been working on a 1977 Champion Bass Boat .... it also has a 1977 Mercury 1150 V6 that needs lots of work. So far I have found CDI and Crowley Marine to be the best.

Still doing my own research to figure out whats-what. Buy a Seloc book, its totally worth the coin. The internal wire on this thing is shot; everything is loose, some wires are split, and the remaining wires fall apart if you touch them.

Ill let you know if I find a full blown internal harness or if i get stuck playing the cut and splice game. I'm trying to keep my pockets tight as well and don't look forward to dumping a bunch of money into a pre-historic outboard.

Keep me updated on what you find out!

By your logic, if the carbs don't work the engine is junk? these carbs are about the easiest carbs in the world to rebuild, i did mine this past winter. And carbs do not "fire" either. Do a compression test and then update us. No the engine will not start without the internal harness.
