Okay guys I have a carb issue with the merc 4.5hp. The carb doesnt seem to have enough clearance past the studs to come out. I also see that the choke lever is plastic, and I think if I can remove it I will be able to get the carb out, but I am afraid to break it. Does it come out any special way or do I just need to remove the powerhead. I swear carb jobs on Merc's are a HUGE pain....

You don't have to pull the powerhead. I believe there is a little technique to getting the choke lever off properly. IFIRC you need to push in and twist to remove the lever. I can't remember, but if you study it a minute, you'll be able to figure it out----it's spring loaded.. YOu should also be able to remove the top of the float bowl as well. DON'T break the plastic lever, they can be hard to find for a reasonable price.

Cool thanks man. I figured it out. Basically, I pulled the top of the float bowl, the choke lever, and the stud on the right side(the one that holds the carb in) There is a slot on the left side of the carb that allows you to slip it upward instead of out. Then I unscrewed the stud from the block on the right side. Man I am glad I studied it a bit before breaking anything.

Buy a rebuild kit for that carb, and pump.
I can't believe anyone would remove and disasemble a carb without doing that.
Insane.

I know right! I keep Merc carb kits on hand. I have a few models with the tillotsen carb.
