Hello,

Could someone please provide the wiring diagram of the wires from the wiring harness to the boat console.

I just transferred this motor to my boat.

Thanks

Re: 1977 Johnson 85 hp 85el77s wiring question

The wiring to the ignition is intact. What I have a question with is the following:

from the motor:

black
green
white

from the ignition:

black from terminal M
red/Dark pink from terminal B
blue from terminal A

FYI - the following wires are from the motor to the ignition

brown to terminal C
pink to terminal M (different from black)
orange to terminal S

Also, does anyone know if there is a safety switch on this motor that I should be aware of before starting?

Thanks

Neutral start just like your car.

The neutral safety switch is in the remote control; it's open when the control handle is in the neutral position.

The white wire activates the starter solenoid; it runs from the S post on the ignition switch to the positive small post on the starter solenoid. The neutral safety switch is in line of the white wire.

Re: 1977 Johnson 85 hp 85el77s wiring question

Ezeke,

Is this the wiring diagram to the 85el77s? If so, I have my work cut out for me as my ignition switch and wiring is different. I must have a replacement. Oh well, I will need a picture of the entire wiring diagram so I can trace from source to destination on everything coming to and from the motor, ignition switch and gages.

Thanks

What remote control do you have? You could have a six post ignition switch, where the one in the diagram has five. The only real difference is in the choke, where the new 6 post switch activates the choke by pushing in the key and has the extra post. The earlier remote control had a toggle switch for the choke and 5 posts on the ignition switch as shown in the diagram.

There is no standard green wire in any V4 harness from 1973 through 1976.

If you are trying to adapt an older electric shift harness to the 85el77, it won't work. You would be better off to get a 6 point ignition switch and standardize the setup.

Re: 1977 Johnson 85 hp 85el77s wiring question

Ezeke,

Thanks. I do have the newer ignition switch that has the push in choke. My service manual arrived in today's mail and with some of the pics I had taken of this setup before removing it from the boat it was on I was able to figure out what was going on. The prior owner wired the motor fuse through the fuse block for the accessories?????

So, I setup an inline fuse for the ignition and we are all set. Last thing to do is connect the gages.

Finally, the prior owner bypassed the safety switch located in the control box. I don't like the idea that someone could start this motor in gear, so we will address that as well.

Thanks for your help.

As far as the green wire. The prior owner replaced the wire harness without color matching the wires?????

Oh well, i will have to mark/tag all the new wires with their original colors.
