1977 Johnson 35HP slipping out of gear

My engine is making the thump at WOT. It is a 1977 35HP. From the looks of things in my Seloc manual, this looks like an expensive problem. Do they even make replacement gears and clutches for these older engines anymore? Anyone had to deal with a problem like this before?

Thanks for your help-Jeff.

A fairly common problem. You will need a new clutch dog and forward gear. And new seals. About $250 for the parts. Yes, so far they are available.

If you don't already know, the key to minimizing this problem from happening again is to not be gentle with it when shifting. You should always shift into gear with a quick decisive snap action. "Easing" it into gear is death to the parts.

Thanks to both of you for your help. I guess I need to track down the parts now. -Jeff.
