I ahve a 1977 JOhnson 200hp outboard that reaches max rpm at 4000 rpm.
The propeller is is a three blade aluminum with 14.5" x 19" pitch.
I suspect that the propeller is over-pitched for the boat and motor (boat is a 1976 Cruisers/Mirro 21' walkaround - a Bonzanza??)
The boat is principally used for cruising.
Does anyone know the max rpm range for this motor? Or at least have a suggestion?

Re: 1977 Johnson 200hp Performance

It should reach a lot higher than 4000rpm, GW, and it should reach it with that 19" prop unless your boat is a real scow.

What is the history of this boat/motor? Is this the performance it had when you bought it?

A shorter prop. . . 15" or 17" should get you up into the mid-5000rpm range, but you need to verify that your engine is making 200hp and your boat is not hauling around several hundred pounds of water that you don't know about. Do this BEFORE you invest in a change of props.

Good luck, GW.
Red sky at night. . .
JB :)
