Hi fellas,
Sorry if this question as been addressed but I could not find it. I bought this motor for 250 bucks. Its in rough shape but after some TLC she runs like a top. But I just pulled the lower unit drain bolt and pure water came out. Not a hint of oil. I have no idea how long its been run in this condition. I literally know nothing about these motors and units so need your help. Is the lower unit fried? I'm pulling it off today I will post pics. The prop turns fine and has no play if this helps?? I was thinking just a new gasket kit? I'm so lost fellas. I don't know what tools I will need to change the gaskets? Thanks again everyone.

Welcome to the forum.
No metal filings came out?
You can pressure test the lower unit to find out where it is leaking, check with your local dealer and see if you brought in the lower unit if they would pressure test it for you. Could be the gears are OK, the only way to know for sure is to tear it down and check it out.

Thanks for getting back with me so quickly! There was no metal filing that i saw. the water that came out was crystal clear with maybe a few drops of oil that ran out at the very end. I have been trying to find a diagram to figure out how exactly the lower unit is designed to figure out where it can leak from? I thought the only two spots water could go in was through the prop and the mating surface between the lower unit and the shaft housing?
