I have a 1977 115hp evinrude and my trim cylinder is leaking. I have searched fo a gasket for it but cannot locate one. The only numbers I have is M/N 115799 and S/N 99362. I need the starboard side trim cylinder gasket set, if there is such a thing. Thanks in advance to anyone who would assist.

Rodney

Welcome arkur!

Go to your local John/rude dealer and the PN you will need is 174520. This is the seal kit for the cylinders....one kit per cylinder.

You can also check your local NAPA dealer also....Sierra might have a kit. But I would try the Dealer first. The original PN of the kit was 172575.

obj, thanks for the help. I have had such a run around on this locally. The dealer wanted me to spend a couple hundred for a new cylinder. I new there was a way to repair the darn thing. Thanks for the part #.

Rodney

OBJ, I'm assuming those part numbers are the same on my 77 Evinrude 85hp. Do you have any kind of ballpark figure as to how much the seal kits are, and the difficulty to fix them? I know mine leaks, enough that I can notice a difference in the position of motor after, say, an hour. Also are the tilt assist shocks, or whatever they're called, prone to going bad and are they easy to replace, if they are replaceable?

Re: 1977 Evinrude Trim Cylinder Issue

Hey Mikey....how's it goin'?

There was two different TNT units used that year Mike...one had a plate bolted to the swivel bracket...that's the one arkur has got. Got to read the model number to be sure. Both kits' run about the same....$13 and some lose change.

As far as rebuilding the cylinders, most guys will find the hardest part is removing the head of the cylinder. Takes a spanner wrench. Also getting the plunger with oring on it down into the cylinder can be trickey to do without screwing up the oring. I use very thin brass shim stock to wrap around the plunger and oring with lottsa' TNT fluid to get the plunger into the cylinder. I have rebuilt them with out removing the cylinder completely from the boat. But the engine has to be supported while doing this.

They can go bad just like anything else. I have TNT set up on my 50hp 84' Johnny with the plate attached to the stern bracket. Haven't had any problems with it so far.

Mikeyzx2,

I found some O rings and ordered a new cylinder cap for the trim cylinder. The O rings we about 12 bucks and the cylinder cap was about 45. You will need a cylinder cap wrench to take the trim cylinder apart. when you put it back together, use some graphite greese to lube the O rings. If not you will tear them. I have some exploded views of trim cylinders if you want them. Just let me know.

Re: 1977 Evinrude Trim Cylinder Issue

OBJ, everything's going great on my end, just spending alot of free time fooling with my two motors, having fun though. I really enjoy it though, I'm the type that likes to see how things are put together and how they work. Anyways my TNT is like arkur's the cylinders are mounted on the outside of stern bracket, the ends are bolted to a plate that is mounted on the swivel like you described. I did notice something a while back when I was first fooling with the TNT. I added fluid to pump, and when I started raising the motor I noticed some fluid leak from the bottom area of cylinder on the other side. It only did it that one time and the trim worked fine. Also what are the rubber caps on them for? I notice one on the cylinder I mentioned above, and looks like it covers a fitting of some sort.

Arkur, sure thing I would like a diagram so I can look it over and see what I'm getting myself into. Thanks alot guys, I'm going to local dealer tomorrow so I'll see what I can get.

Mike
