I need to replace the lower unit on my 1977 Evinrude 140 (model 140743S)but have been told by one individual that the only unit that will fit this model is the 1977 140 HP. Another has told me that any 85, 115, 140 lower unit from 1978-1992 will fit.

Who is correct?

Neither. Or both, depending on how you look at it.

Obviously another 20" 1977 140 unit will work. A 1978 and newer (not just to 92) crossflow 20" V4 unit will work also but you'll need the intake manifold and shift linkage. If you use a looper gearcase you'll still need the intake and linkage from a 78 & newer V4 crossflow and the shift shaft. Not really a big deal.
