I just recently got a 1977 9.9hp johnson outboard and when I bought it the guy started and ran it, it started on the first pull. The following weekend we took it out on the water and it wouldn't hardly start after a long time of pulling I got it to fire up and we took it out. It ran perfectly would idle down low and everything like it should. we decided to stop and swim for a while and got back in the boat and it wouldn't start. It would start up and then die a second later. I brought it home tried again in a barrel and it wouldn't start in nuetral but did better in gear. I am confused why does it run so well once it is started but wont start for me? I am new to these motors so anything will help, thank you.

Will it start if you squirt some fuel into the carb throat, might be time to overhaul the carb.

I just took apart the carb and cleaned it well and put it back together, but its no better. I am pretty sure that it is flooding and the plugs are wet but other than that good. The float is good I submerged it and no bubbles and it floats everytime. Any suggestions?

what's your cold starting procedure?..in neutral, choke fully on, throttle advanced as far as it will go?...tries to fire, push choke off, start, allow to warm up before putting it in gear....try leeroysramblings.com...outboard motor related articles...9.9/15 hp. maintenance and repair...link and sync procedure....as to the started first pull for the seller, oftentimes if the seller knows a prospect is coming he'll start the motor and get it warm before your arrival..this can mask many cold start problems

Yes. Make sure your throttle is advanced as far as it can go (in nuetral only). You might also try turning the rich/lean knob about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn counterclockwise. If this helps, conduct the following procedure to ensure the carb is set properly.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167352

Also, verify that your carb and timing plate are aligned properly. This is done by ensuring that the little roller on your carb touches the throttle plate cam at a point where the indent mark (arrow or line) on the throttle cam is in the center of the roller, just as the throttle starts to open (when the roller touches the cam). If the roller touches the cam too late, your throttle fully open will be less open and can cause very hard starting. You could also try and adjust this so that the arrow or mark is slightly to the left of the roller (when looking straight on towards the back of the motor) so that the throttle is a little more open during start up. This may reduce top end performance slightly but if it starts easier, go for it.

Did you originally start the motor when you bought it with "HIS" fuel setup or "YOURS"? If it was "HIS" maybe you should be looking elseware instead if your carb........just sayin'....if you did use "YOUR" fuel tank, bulb, hose and connector then proceed with other remedies like tapping the carb for a stuck float, cleaning the carb screen, etc. Good luck.

Thanks for all of the info guys. I will tinker with it a little more this weekend. I ordered a carb kit for it I figured might as well give it a little TLC no matter what. I will also be getting some new spark plugs for it too. I will keep you guys updated on what happens.

Re: 1977 9.9hp Johnson

Well everyone, I tried the timing but it seemed to be dead on so I didn't mess with it. I tried adjusting the lean/ rich knob and that didnt do much. The gas tank and lines are brand new so they shouldn't be the problem and the gas is new as well. I am hoping to have that carb kit today to install. After a bit more investigation though I have better assessed the problem. When I go to start it it will sputter a bit so if I give it full throttle when it does it will run but as soon as I back off the throttle it dies. When I put it into gear and can give it even more throttle it runs even better. I just dont know why it wont start?

Have you confirmed that your choke is fully closing properly when you pull out the knob?

also..are you trying to start it with the throttle grip indicator mark on the START indicator on the throttle position plate?..if so, just ignore those markings and twist the throttle grip as far towards FAST as the neutral lockout will allow < it'll probably be beyond the START marking>..once it attempts to fire, push the choke off and it should start at a very high idle...ease it back to a fast warm up idle and when it's warm enough to allow lower rpm's, reduce the throttle and snap it into gear

I got my carb kit yesterday and it did help a little, I am planning on getting new spark plugs today for it. As for the starting procedure, The choke is working properly. I always have the throttle as far past the start position as possible, that is the only way it will start. It still seems to be trying to flood it and I dont know why.

Re: 1977 9.9hp Johnson

looking at the diagram for your carb at marineengine.com...did you remove #5 < core plug > and make certain that each of the 3 tiny holes it covers have a good spray pattern into the rear of the carb throat?...did you remove and clean, or clean in place, #23 orfice plug< main jet > which screws into the casting that extends down into the float bowl?..sometimes you have to physically clean it with some copper wire twisted together, or some other soft material, the jet is made from brass and is precisely sized so don't use anything that might enlarge or distort it....as I learned when I first joined the forums, all the fuel the engine uses enters through that jet and it must be clean an open...

Well I fiddled with the idle fuel mixture a while and added some new spark plugs and it is working much better. We had it out on the water with no issues. One more general question. I do a lot of duck hunting and it freezes where I am at. Is it better to leave the motor in the water while I hunt or take it out so that it wont freeze?

Leave it in the water while you hunt. Everything should drain to water level. When you take it out make sure you tilt it up and down several times right away and it should be fine. Best of luck. Rick.
