I've got a 1977 85hp merc. It runs great wide open but when i try to fish at trolling speed it will start to hesitate and if left alone it will stall.when i fire it back up and quickly put it in gear will keep running but as i give it throttle it takes a few seconds to burn off excess fuel and then she kicks in and runs fine.

I got the motor last spring and i haven't changed the plugs yet because she was running great until this past saturday morning. Thanks for your quick reply. I dont know about the carbs. I do notice alot of fuel laying under the bottom carb.

If you have fuel under your carb I'd definately look into a rebuild. Any excess fuel could lead to an accidental fire. There are several reasons why a carb would leak, but typically a rebuild takes care of 99% of them.

Thanks for the update!

Glad it worked.

Agree with Wheel, long story short, fuel should not be running out of the carbs. I am about to have to rebuild mine b/c of the same issue. Prolly needs to be done anyway, IDK when if ever, it has been done. I am leery of doing it, but when I get my Merc manual I'm going for it.

I'm not gonne lie, though, I'm going to try a decarb first!! :D
