I ordered a water pump Kit for my 1977 Evinrude
70hp from NAPA, PN 183389.
I see that the impeller has a different type of
keyway, then I noticed that the box is marked for
1979-88 70hp. Now what do I do? Can this
impeller be used on my 1977 motor?

Oh! btw there are 6 bolts holding the Lower
unit on. One is hidden under the trim tab.
Just make sure you mark its position before you
take it off.
Thanks for any help.

DWB,

I'm pretty sure you need to take it back. The kit you need should span 1974-1978.

there is a different kit for 79-95.

I believe you need part #18-3388.

Hope this helps

Thanks. I was afraid of that. The NAPA Marine
catalogue I was looking at does not list a kit
for motors older than 1979. It does show the
Impeller though with a different Pn. Maybe I should order that. The housing & wearplates
look OK.

Thanks

Kit you need is available here on Iboats is Sierra part #18-3388 and is for a 1974-78 motor. Does not include the housing though. Napa part number I'm guessing would be 183388.

Also, Ishopmarine has 3 different kits available for my 1978 Johnson 70hp. Two of these are with housing. They don't show one available for the 1977 motor, but since Sierra kit covers 1974-78 I'm wondering if the kits listed for the 1978 motor can actually be used on the 1977 motor. Don't think there is any difference between the lower units of either.

NAPA no longer lists the 18-3388 as a valid PN., so I picked up an impeller at my local boat shop.

I have replaced the impeller & reinstalled the lower unit. Hooked hose to the unit & fired her up. Seems to be getting awful hot & I can't see where any water hot is comming out. Could the muddobber wasps have plugged the outlet? Where is the outlet?

The wasps can be a definate problem especially if the motor has sat for a long time. I think your 70 l/u is probably similar to my 75 50hp, after replacing my impeller and starting the motor it overheated rapidly, that's when I noticed the damn nest, I could see it in the set of holes just above the cavitation plate, pulled the l/u back off & cleaned it out. Not wanting to leave it half done I pulled the cover off the head, in addition to them getting in there too I had a bad thermostat. Luckily I had already bought a replacement t/stat & cover gasket since I was going to be in there figured might as well replace it.

Hope this helps,
Mike

the impeller # on 74 through 78 is different you need 18- 3082 impeller . think you will have to buy in seperate pices as the NAPA dont show in a kit . the kit you have might work except the impeller.
