1977 55HP Water Flow

Hi Everone,
I just purchased an old boat with a 1977 55HP Evinrude. The motor runs but needs carbs rebuilt, rebuild kit on the way.The person I bought this from said he replaced the impeller and lower unit seals. I am trying to find out if water is flowing correctly. I have been reluctant to run it for more than a minute because it doesn't idle. When I put muffs on it and turn on the water, water comes out between the lower and upper unit. I thought this would be sealed. When I started it very little water came out through the prop. I then started it in a tub of water. Water again came out between the lower and upper units. I was expecting water to come out of the vents in the rear, right below the motor. Do I need to let it warm up to observe water flow? Does this motor have a thermostat? If someone can explain to me what I should be looking foe I would greately appreciate it. I also have a repair manual on the way.

OK, first things first. You are worrying over nothing, concerning water coming out that seam. Yes, they were originally sealed at the factory, but few people bother with that when they have the lower unit off. It doesn't matter at all if water comes out there, because that water has already gone thru the engine and done it's job and is heading back to the lake anyway.

The entire midsection fills up with water before any sprays out the exhaust relief holes, and even then it is sort of chancy. Launch the boat in the lake and you may find it is just fine. Besides, you cannot test a water pump by running on muffs, and not much better in a tub.

Needless to say, you might want to get it running right before taking it out on the water.

F_R, Thanks for the response. I feel pretty good about this motor. Carb kits and fuel pump are on the way. If all goes well I will have a decent fishing boat for a really good price.
