1977 35 hp water issues

I just bought this thing and I dont know much about boats. It is a 1977 35 hp evinrude...When the engine is running with the "rabbit ears" there is no water comming out of the two ports on the exhaust chamber nor anywhere else. I replaced the water pump and it made no difference. I only let it run for about five minutes to prevent possible damage. Could the thermostat be stuck, or just not hot enough to open in that amount of time? Where is the thermostat? Shouldnt water be comming out somewhere even if the thermostat isnt open? Any help will be much appreciated!!!!

Something is definitely wrong with the water pump. The lower unit needs to be dropped again and everything checked out. There are too many variables that could be wrong to mention. Do you have a service manual?

No, I dont. I have pulled the lower unit 3 times now and everything is connected, all new gaskets and seals, and the pump turns nicely.

Ok check these pictures and verify all parts are in the right orientation, especially the water pump wear plate with that slot in that position. Also #115 is a grommet in the exhaust housing. The water tube must be in that housing. Also the grommet on the water pump must be in good condition and the water tube must seat in it. When you have the lower unit removed, tape a garden hose on the water tube that goes up into the exhaust housing and test it. Make sure the water tube is clear.

Thanks for all the help guys, but I figured it out. there wasnt anything wrong with it. I put it in a 50 gallon trash can full of water ant it worked perfectly. The rabbit ears must not have been allowing for enough flow. But, thanks again!
