1977-1979 850 Merc (85 HP) Question

Hi All. I am wondering if there is any problems that I need to know about this type of motor. I am thinking of buying a bout with on of these motors on it, but I was wondering if they are good on gas, do they overheat, how much gas they use at WOT per hour... and any other problems or concerns I should have. Thanks so much in advance.

Those motors were a standard design, are pretty light for the power they make and were reasonable on gas use. They like clean fuel, clean carbs and regular waterpump maintenance.

You do realize you are considering a 30+ year old motor? If it has been used in saltwater, the condition is likely poor. Inspect the motor wiring harness. These usually rot out by this time.
