hello all. hopefully everyone is having a good boating season. i am trying to start mine. i have a 1976 johnson with tnt. last time out last year it would not raise the motor at the dock. so i turned the valve and raised it by hand to get it home. i had not messed with it until recently because of busy schedule. after reading thread after thread i tried the hammer trick and it worked for a minute. before while under power the motor would not raise but did ok while barely moving. i am thinking my brushes may need cleaned or replaced. my question is can i remove the top of the pump and pull the brushes out and inspect / clean them or, do i need to drain the oil pull the pump and disassemble it to do this. it seems that it is hanging up and tapping with a screwdriver handle gets it going so i am hoping i can clean the brushes and get a little more use out of her. any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks in advance

It would probably be best to take the whole mtr off and go through it.

Re: 1976 tilt n trim question

if you have a prestolite then just buy one of the cheap, new replacements and be done with it. If you have a Calco then muck around with it and try to squeeze out a few extra months. When the calco is beyond repair then throw it away. The prestolite pump was also used on OMC I/O. Replacements and repairs are cheaper and easier. You can find complete used (and running) pumps on craigslist for under $100.
