I have a 1976 Galaxie with an OMC (I think its a Stringer it has the electric shift and gear motor trim)

Does anyone have a 1976 OMC manual?

Im having issues with my trim motor not working all the time ( solenoids work ) and my alternator charging.

My trim motor does not work 100%, more like 40%-60% of the time, when it goes down its almost uncontrolled, but goes up fine. solenoids work, haven't been able to make sure the voltage is getting to the motor 100% as I need a friend to operate the switch.

My alternator is not charging and I would like to have a wire diagram so I can diagnose if its the alternator, regulator, or a wire issue.

Thanks!!!

Stringer has a tilt motor in back, and a trim motor on the front mount. Tilt motor brushes go bad often as the motor sits low in the bilge

I have one motor that tilts it up and down. I don't know if you could call it trim but you can trim it with the same motor.

it's on the left side of the engine inside the boat, down low and mounted to the inside part of the outside of the boat. Drives a gear that tilts the outdrive up and down

NO you can not-trim with moving the out-drive up or down. The drive must be all the way down when running, your drive has ball gears and it will eat them up rapidly if you try to trim like that. The trim is adjusted on the front of the motor by raising it up or down. Mine has a jack screw run by a motor that raises the motor or lowers it, This causes the drive to rock up and down. Lot of people don't like it but for me it works fine.

That's your tilt motor ... DO NOT TRIM with that motor ... it's bad for the motor, clutch pack and your ball gears. You can use it for a shallow water tilt, but keep your RPMs low and only use when necessary. The Stringer is designed to run tilted full down. If you have trim, it'll be on the front of your engine inside the boat. Trim on a Stringer tilts the entire engine and drive from inside.

If you're drive is raising all of the time, then the tilt is probably working right. If it's slamming down, that's kind of a normal thing with this system. Most of us who've had them have learned you just kind of "bump" the switch down a couple of times until the drive is in place. You don't really wanna' just hit it and go. If the motor just plain doesn't wind, then you'll probably need to pull it and have it rebuilt - check your solenoids and your voltage to the motor (way down in the bilge, port side) first.

Welcome aboard.
