My 1976 Mercury 1150 has power tilt and trim with an external pump. On the dash, the controls have 3 buttons. The bottom button goes down. Middle button seems to move it outward with a limited range of motion. Top button only does anything if it's pressed at the same time as the middle button.

That's how it seems to me.

Down: Bottom button
Up: Top and Middle buttons together

I am still working on it and haven't taken it out on the water yet. But I'm imagining that pushing two buttons is going to get inconvenient. Especially because the buttons are older and require some effort to engage.

Does anyone have the wiring diagram for the controls from this year?

Has anyone replaced the factory trim controls with a two-button system? Or integrated them into a newer throttle control?

On eBay I found this pic.

Mine is under a cover so I'll look later.

That is the way it is supposed to work.

Middle button is trim up. Trim stops when the trim limit switch on the starboard trim bracket opens. There is a stainless steel "finger" that pushes the switch open or shut. It is adjustable, and is supposed to open as outboard trims up to the point when it comes out of the transom bracket.

To tilt the motor fully up, push middle and top trim buttons together.

You are lucky the trim limit switch still works. Most have broken by now.

Once you set the "finger" to stop the trim before the motor starts overreving it's a handy feature.
Trim in to take off then out for hi-speed running.
Make sure the tilt pin is installed into at least the first hole.

That's what I need to know! You and Chris are super helpful. My pin is already set in the first hole. And the trim stop works.

Well today I learned something. Thanks you guys.
