Should there be any play where the flywheel bolts to the crank?

I would say the crank is broken.

Doesn’t look good there. Is there a damper on that at all ? I’d disable the ignition and take the plugs out…then put it in gear..have someone turn the prop shaft whilst you check up there. See if any backlash is taken up some or otherwise

Make sure the ring of small bolts around the large flywheel bolt are tight. Sometimes they need Loctite to stay that way.

Could be a Pooched Upper Bearing, but in any case the Crankcase is gonna need to be split to see what is going on in there
