Sure of that year, hp? The 1976 85hp Johnson had a flat exhaust baffle plate as did the 115hp. The only bubble back exhaust baffle plate setup that year was the 1976 135hp. Model number?

Hello, and thanks, the model number is 85ETLR7GD.. On the Evinrude/Johnson site it only shows Johnson going from 85 to 200.. Now the Evinrude has the 135 though.. Any idea of why these were installed? Thanks

You don't really need the baffles that go inside anyway. There's some argument to be made that once you re-prop up to 56k+ rpms they're actually a detriment to performance. After chatting with DHadley on the matter, I decided to forgo the use of mine when I switched out to the bubble back. Runs fine w/o.

So just leave out the "tuners" and keep the bubbleback in place then? Thanks for the info...Paul

That's what I did. The bubble back wasn't OEM on the 85. Did the crankcase get notched to accept the bubble back? w/o the tuners you won't need to.

That model number of 85ETLR7GD....... the "7G", double check that closely as there is no "G".

Will the bubble back improve the performance on an 85hp? I was under the impression the bubble back was meant for the larger displacement V4s of that vintage.

Re: 1976 johnson 85hp

Bombardier makes a complete exhaust block filler kit for their later V4 engines. 392000. It's about $ 172 and still available. Some things to check: your block may not be cast with the bosses to mount the filler blocks to, since these were designed for the 99.6 cubic inch block and yours is the 92.6 block. Attached is a picture of a 135 block with the exhaust stuffers installed. Just below the two stuffers, there is a casting bridge which should be removed. You can see the shiny mill cut. Not sure you'll get any gains that are worth your effort. Are you running the intake stuffers? Have you upgraded the carbs, reeds?

With new exhaust tune filler blocks installed, they will be higher than the crankcase surface. This will require having a machine shop mill them down to specifications.

Thanks for the info. Just what exactly do the intake stuffers do, what carb upgrades should I go with and reed selection? Happen to have a link for the Bombardier site for the kit? thanks for the info , Im still new to the outboard world...Any good site for upgrades/mods? Thanks

You'll get more performance from a set of larger carbs (from a 135) than trying to work on the exhaust side-which requires block maching. It's a bolt-on change. You may need to rejet larger carbs, but they do offer gains. Composite reeds help the idling and mid range pickup. Intake stuffers (322684) reduce internal crankcase space, increasing crankcase compresssion. These are NLA. They were found on a few 115's and all the 140 crossflows.

Anyone happen to have any pics of the "stuffers" they could post or send me? Thanks again...

The "tuned" exhaust won't help much on the 85 because of the small ports. Just leave the inner stuffers out. Bigger carbs won't do much either because of the small ports. You can bore out the motor to 3.500" and open up the ports if you want to. Basically create a 135.
