Hello fellow boatmen, I was wondering if cheap 2 cycle oil can affect performance, in an outboard, should i drain gas and change plugs, only getting one third power now.

How do your current plugs look? If one ore more fouled that will seriously affect performance. Cheap enough to just get a new set. If the gas is fresh and properly mixed, I wouldn't dump it. If you suspects there's water in the fuel, drain and clean the carbs, and get an inline seperating filter.
As far as oil, as long as it meets TCW3 specs, it will work. WalMart stuff is my favorite! Keep us posted.

Thanks Alaska, I changed plugs, I still get about 8mph. this motor was pushing this boat about 36mph. before I got silly and started adjusting the throttle, and the stop screw, could the timeing be thrown off ?. If so what is the correct setting ?. Thank you for the help. Ron.

Why adjust the throttle stop? For more RPM's? May have gone the wrong way on the screw. If you played with the timing, I'd suggest getting a manual and a timing light to adjust back to specs. Out of whack carb settings and/or timing can kill performance, so whatever you played with start there. If it ain't broke........

Hello Fouled Plug, I found the problem, I Checked compression and found one of the plugs is clean as a whistle, Its getting no spark at all. I beleive its a bad powerpack,What do you think ?. Thanks for the help. And yes I forgot if it aint broke dont fix it!.

Re: 1976 johnson 85hp,v4

I put over 3000hrs on a 76 85hp Johnson a few year back. The engine would eat a power pac every two years like clock work, but it would just die. Never did it just loose spark in one cylinder. My guess would be to check the coil for that cylinder. First eyeball it for cracks in the epoxy covering. If it looks good them swap it with the one above or below it and see if the problem follows that coil to another cylinder.

Which throttle screw did you turn. Are you sure you didn't turn the screw that looks straight at you from under the flywheel? Thats the timing if you did.

Did she ever fire on the new plugs in that cylinder?? Be aware that if a headgasket is shot water in a cylinder can clean a plug like new.

Don't be using cheap oil in that engine.
Use nothing but OMC oil. Those small block V4's like to carbon up on the cheap oils. You should also be running OMC Engine Tuner or Seafoam carbon removers thru her every 50hrs.

Hi Big Four, Thanks a lot for the info. And yes the old plugs all looked the same before I changed them, IM going to swap out the coil as you suggested. Is it possible to adjust that timeing screw with the motor running and timeing on ?, If so what should it be reading on the mark ?. Also it sounds like a powerpack for this model does not have a long life!!!.Thank you very much!.Ron.

I not sure which year range, but some of the igniting problems were caused by too much air gap on the timer sensors, Rapair made a plastic tool to set this gap. I will try to find out more about this and the year spread. Looks like the tool is for pp2/pp3/pp4 these are packs with termial board on pack.
