1976 johnson 40 el wont crank!!

The motor did crank a few times but did not start. Now it won't cranck and there is not even a spark when I put the cable on starter!!!. Any ideas why? Battery is still good and fully charged.
I was using jumper cables, the negative from battery to the ground on engine block, the positive to the red wire on the side of the starter.
I'd appreciate any kind of help.
