Re: 1976 Johnson 20 hp Question

The "8" in the Model Number should be a "B".

20BA76E....20 is the hp, BA in later years ment AC accessory lighting equipped, 76 is the year and "E" is just the model run.

The serial number is a number asigned to the engine by the manufacturer for identification.

Been looking around and can't find the engine in my part smart program.....but a complete listing, on another site, shows the engine model number. Maybe one of the other guys will know a little more about the engine.

Re: 1976 Johnson 20 hp Question

Your a good man OBJ,
I appreciate the help (again).
I'm trying to find the correct controler and cables for that engine for my son's "water cat".
Do the correct cables for it work on just any Hot Foot throttle control.
What I would like to do, is have a contoler for the gears and a Hot Foot for the throttle.
I would need short cables though and I not sure how short you can get the cables, what type of ends to get or where to buy them??

Re: 1976 Johnson 20 hp Question

Sounds like a plan Neonbee....

Control cables length go as short as 8ft. Not sure which cable will fit the hot foot though. Maybe a call to a local dealer might help? I've never installed a hot foot so....seen plenty but never noticed what type of cable works..... :)

Might be a cable with a threaded end like is used on I/O's. The gear shift can either be the Long Life cabe or SnapIn cable for the control.

Re: 1976 Johnson 20 hp Question

Thanks OBJ,
Have you ever seen, or know of anyone who has the connecting hook-up for the AC accessory lighting option on that motor??
I'd be nice to put lights on it!!

Much appreciated LLB,
I know you mentioned the "ship master" controler in the previous thread, but there is a slight problem I have with it.
It has 2 shifters and will have to be mounted to the left side of the water cat.
I want to right side mount (he's right handed) the controler and I need one with 1 shifter. I'll use the controler for the gears and the hot foot for the throttle. ( are you confused yet?? )
Will you part with the cables alone?? What are the lengths? Will the gear cable work in a single shifter johnson controler??
(so many questions and so little time :p :D ;) )
My addy is neonbee@yahoo.com

Re: 1976 Johnson 20 hp Question

neonbee thise controller are changeable to port or starboard mount. they are very simple controls, just open it up, disconnect the cables and routed them out the other end. cool little toy, hope you have a kill switch w/lanyard.

Thanks tashasdaddy,
I appreciate that!
Kill switch w/lanyard has been ordered and is in the mail. I should see it in the next couple days. SAFTEY is paramount when it comes to my kids or ANY kids!!
The problem I have, is the controler has to be fairly small and mount on the INSIDE starboard side and take the right cable for that year motor. pfffffffffff

Re: 1976 Johnson 20 hp Question

i understand, what you are saying, about the child being right handed. that's why i would put the shifter on the port side, so he can keep the right hand on the steering. the picture looks like it is set up for a motor cycle type throttle. going to do some searching. boy it looks like a lot of fun. in florida, you have to be 14 y/o, and have a boaters license to operate one of these.

Re: 1976 Johnson 20 hp Question

look at the iboats store part#045978 single function starboard mount control, use with hot foot control. order w/ johnson end cable. will mount to the side of the seat boat or the front cowling, uses thru bulkhead fitting. so all you see is the lever.

Re: 1976 Johnson 20 hp Question

Great Idea tashasdaddy!!
I'll have to look into it more!!
In Ontario, you can be between 12 years and under 16 years of age, and not be directly supervised and can operate vessels with under 40 hp.
You cannot operate a PWC until you are 16 years of age.
You also need your Boat Operators Card (exam w/pass) and he's all for getting it!! :D
I'm not sure where this vessel falls, as it has an outboard motor under 40 hp attached??
Thanks for your input!!
