I have a 1976 Johnson 115 hp model number 115el76. A few weeks ago while on the lake I turned the motor off and when I went to restart the key switch had died on me. Long story short since the old remote control was pretty jacked up I spent the money on a new remote control and new wire harness. Well after getting all that on of course my switch problem was fixed but it took me forever to get it to start. Once it did start it didn't take long for it to overheat. Now I have the water pump kit on order but I got to looking at the choke solenoid and the piston is stuck in the up position. I don't know if something shorted everything out when the switch went bad or what but I need to know what all i need to order to fix the electric choke. I am having trouble finding parts for my motor but have ordered parts for the evinrude same year and HP and it seems they are the same. Do I need just the solenoid and reuse the little piston and spring because I have found a used one on ebay for $50. The new one is over double that.

Thanks in advance for your help

A replacement solenoid should rectify your problem. Reuse the plunger and spring. When you reinstall the new solenoid, it can be adjusted up or down, slightly in the clamp bracket. Make sure you set it so that it operates the choke butterflys through their entire range of movement. You may have to pull the airbox cover off to visually check the movement when installed.
