I have a 1976 Honda 7.5hp outboard that was running fine. I replaced the impeller and now I have no spark. Is there a neutral switch or anything in the shift column that could have gotten moved/damaged during the impeller replacement?

Thanks for the feedback. Do you know of a place to get a pdf service manual for those old motors? I disconnected the kill switch to see if that had any impact but still no spark.
How were you troubleshooting the no spark condition ?

To troubleshoot the no spark condition I took one of the spark plugs out the the cylinder and put it into the spark plug wire and connected a ground wire to the threaded end of the spark plug and watched for a spark. The motor was running fine before I changed the impeller and all I did was hit the kill switch to stop if from running then dropped the lower end and put in the new impeller. The only thing I touched on the upper end of the motor was disconnect the shift linkage. I checked the wires around the kill switch to make sure I didn't pinch anything. I also disconnected the kill switch to make sure it wasn't shorted.

On my 1981 7.5hp I have a neutral safety switch at the front of the motor under the cowl that is activated by the shift lever.
Maybe the older ones don't.
The spark is very hard to see.
I have to check mine with the lights off in the garage.

Serial numbers help identify what you have and the options. Honda sells a very nice manuals on their website and they do a very good job on diagnostics. There is an old b75 book on their site that may apply to you. The wiring diagrams are handy as a couple things are counterintuitive. On my b100 I replaced the spark plug connectors, they do unscrew from the wire. I cut an old one open with a hacksaw and found the resistor inside was toast. My no spark engine ran again. Boats dot net has all the bits.
