i've got a 1976 evinrude outboard 6 hsp, that i took out to the lake yesterday, it ran fine for a couple of hours then suddenly while running died, tried to re-start it ,but it wouldn't start..took the portable gas tank and set it on the side where you fill it up, and the motor started and ran good, what could have possibly cause this situation ? any help would be appreciated thanks.

it died before i put it to the side
ok...but did you try squeezing the primer bulb before you put the tank on its side?? if so, did it feel like the tank was empty? ie not pump up firm?

Could be a clogged fuel line, or pickup in the tank. Start by checking the fuel connections, do the simple stuff first. Then if the fuel lines are good then start checking stuff like the spark plug an etc...

Is the gas tank vented? It sounds like either the tank was clogged or developed a vacuum that was preventing fuel from flowing.
