Today I went to start the engine on muffs and usually it runs great but today it would only start for like 3 seconds and then shutoff. I took the cover off and noticed the metal choke flaps on the carbs were stuff in the down position and inspected the whole engine and found this little lever that moves in 3 positions down, middle, up and I flipped the level to the middle and all of a sudden it let the choke flaps go free and the engine ran perfect again. What is this lever and what does it do? Thanks

Re: 1976 evinrude 85hp question

That lever..... Choke OFF, Choke ELECTRIC, Choke ON, allows one to operate the choke manually should the electric choke solenoid fail, you lose electric power, etc.

Obviously someone had accidently moved it to the manual Choke ON position.
