Re: 1976 evinrude 85hp identical to a 1975?

Hey

Well whats both of the model numbers off each motor?

Also goto http://www.crowleymarine.com/omc_parts/Evinrude-Outboards.cfm
, when you get the model numbers and compare both engines side by side (2 browser windows open side by side) and seach parts numbers to see if they match up. One MAJOR thing depending on what your doing with the motor is shaft length.

Now Im doing this too, 1977 55hp and Im looking at getting a 1976 55hp. Everything so far matched except the carbs, they look identical in the pic and everything but Im unsure why the part numbers aren't matching. My pistons, rings, lower unit , cylinderhead, midsection , fuel pump , all the electrical stuff and everything else matched up thought.

What items are you looking for off the other engine your looking at? If thats what your doing anyway. Mabey I can do some digging for ya too. But you need model numbers.

Well the model of my 1976 85hp evinrude is 85693D and I found some carbs and stuff but no model number to the same engine just a 1975 and I have about another hour to make the decision. Basically I'm looking for anything for this motor absolutly anything to just have spare parts as it's getting pretty old. Thanks

Does not appear that there were many differences between these two engines. Mostly common parts. Keep in mind that the 85 hp engine in both years was a 92 cubic inch block, the 115 and 135 were 99.6 cubic inch blocks.

Well I just looked up and there is only 1 model number for that 1975 85HP Evinrude so that clears that up. Let me see what matches up, Im not totally sure of the shaft length thought. You saying you have an hour left leads me to belive its some sort of auction (Ebay?). Does the seller get into what the shaft length is? Or can you shoot a question to him, hopefully he gets back quick? Hang in there im going to look now.

Things that match

Carbs P/N's match.
Pistons and rings P/N match.
Cylinder head and crank case schematics look identical and P/N's seem to all match.
Exhaust housing schematics and P/N match.
Fuel pump matches.
Gearcase (lower units) P/N match, the schematic has a very small alteration. 1 shows the metal cover and housing insert that goes into the water pump housing along with the seal. The other schematic doesn't show it. Prolly the same Ive noticed there are some small diffrences with some years showing stuff and some years not showing it. Its prolly the same.
However the 1976 motor is showing a Power tilt and trim while the 1975 doesnt have that from the factory. I dont know if it can be added either.
Stator P/N matches
Trigger P/N matches
The retifier (Charges the battery) is the same P/N
Wire Harness P/N match
Flywheel P/N match

Not sure of or doesn't match

Power packs seem slightly diffrent in the schematic, also the P/N's DONT match. I wouldn'y expect to use the power pack off of it. Mabey an expert can chime in.
Coils seem to have diffrent P/N's , ones 0502888 and other is 0502890. Not sure, need an expert to clarify.

Ill dig some more, but that should give you an general idea. Try to figure out the shaft length of both your motor and the one your looking at if you planning on using the Lower unit and midsection stuff.
