Picked on up today. Engine outside looked brand new. Not a spot of grease/grit/rust anywhere. Propeller has little wear. Not a knick, ding, etc.. anywhere. The boat shop said it came from someone who never used it that much. I ran it today. No problems. Starts first pull, runs like new, and what I paid for it, well, that's between me and my bank account, but I'll tell you, it was a sweet deal. You could eat off this engine. Must have been kept in storage for a long time.
Anything I should do?
It makes my little jon boat fly.

Hi Matt,
If it runs good as is, the only thing I would consider changing would be the water pump impeller. They can become brittle with age and when they fail it's usually when you're furthest from where you want to be. Don't cost much either, and it's an easy replacement.

One other thing, just give the fuel hoses a good check out to make sure they aren't cracking.

Have fun!
- Scott

The impeller and lower unit lube for certain. Also consider a new thermostat. Those 5.5/6 hp OMC's are one of my favorite motors, smooth runners and durable. Sounds like you got a good deal!

Well, had it out twice now. Runs great. It's quiet. I am going to check that impeller. The guy said the lower unit is good, and doesn't need oiled. But, I should probably lube it anyway.
The only thing I've noticed is one of the bolts for the block seems to be leaking a little oil, it's the right side bolt on the back of the engine (side where cover latch is). Don't know what it could be, but maybe a seal of some sorts. I'll have my uncle check it out. My best bet would to secure a manual for this engine!
One more thing, what's the best way to deal with the rich/lean mixture knob? I just adjust it to where the engine runs smooth.
