So I was gifted a boat with the above engine and recently put it in the water. after running for quite some time I got an alert about over voltage. Checked the voltage and was over 18 volts were being produced when more than idle speed. I can run at idle speed to slightly over) but the system keeps producing about 17.[7-9] volts. Ran a test after getting home and as the motor sat at idle the voltage would continue to keep creeping up as it sat there. I ordered a CDI 193-3408 regulated rectifier in hopes to keep it from climbing as such. The current rectifier has 2 yellow and 1 red and the new rectifier has 2 yellow, 1 red, 1 black, and 1 grey. Can anyone help me understand where the grey wire connects (if at all)?

That is 17 volts, hooked up to a Battery? What was giving the Over Volt Warning?

probably a fish finder...

on my Humminbird years ago using a Merc 50 I had shut downs due to high voltage. I hooked-up 3 Radio SHack 12 volt regulator in parallel to give me 3 amps at a flat12volts.

never had shut downs after

they were cheap in those days.... Amazon probably has much better stuff now.

this one should work....for a flat steady output

Appreciate the responses. Since I don't have a tach I sealed off the tach connection and hooked up the rest as they should be. System provides proper voltage output now without issue nothing more than 13.7 with the motor revved up a bit.

As for the over volt that was my radio calling out high voltage and yes the battery was connected and which caused me to check it once I got home with a real multimeter. The high voltage was read at the battery as well as at the dash which direct connects the battery.

Start with a fully charged battery, perhaps tested at an auto parts store.

Battery was fully charged and is in good working order... possibly could be going but after the change in rectifier no issues. The old rectifier after examining it had wire insulation falling apart on the red right at the housing so if it wasn't the issue it would become one soon. If any problems persist when I can get it back on the water I'll make sure to have the batter tested.

Much appreciate the recommendation.
