Just did this with my 1968 55 HP johnson. The oil in the case needs to be type C, it will say on the oil bottle for electric shift. If you do a search on 1968 johnson shifting problems you will find a lot of help. It will have you check voltage on the wires in nuetral, reverse and forward (sorry cant remember) it will have voltage on one wire in one gear voltage on two in another and none on either in the other gear. There is a switch in the shift lever up front. you have to take it off, do this only if you trace it to there its kinda of a pain to put back together with one person. My problem was the solenoids and the valve in the lower end, $350.00 thru sea-way in Oregon. Changing the oil is probably all it is!! Good luck!!

Thank you so much aaromba. I believe I have found the trouble. For sure I have the wrong gear lube (I just used what had come with the boat). I also think the vacuum starter switch is bad. I will let you know this weekend. Thanks again
