I have a 1976 135 hp chrysler out board it has been sitting for a couple of years,i just had a new water pump installed, and new grease put in the lower unit.took it to the lake and it started right up,seemed to run fine slow ,then when i took off to get on plane.ran fine for a frew moments then died like it just ran out of gas, or like i turned the key off,it started right away.done this twice, then third time would hardly run.finaly stoped and would not start.after pulling out of water, put new fuel lines and primer ball from tank to fuel pump, checked, no water in fuel or carb bowls.if this doesnt solve the problem, where else should i be looking.the outboard mechanic that did the work said it looked like every thing looked good on the engine, but none of the outboard mechanics around here seem to want to work on chrysler outboards.i may have to learn to do it myselve.but dont know where to start.could it be fuel pump?

It could most certainly be a bad fuel pump diaphragm. They do harden with age. They are easy to replace--only six screws--and only cost about 3 bucks.

If you have a quick connect fuel fitting, check for dirt or varnish behind the check ball in the male fitting.

Most importantly, remove the carbs and take off the fuel bowls. If they are not shiny-brite, clean them and the whole carb. WD40 does a nice job. Look for stuck floats, sticking inlet needles and general varnish deposits.

Thanks Frank for the reply,i got the fuel pump kit and put it in even thu i didn find any thing wrong with the old one, checked the carb bowls and they were shiny and clean.it would not start, when i choked it fuel came out of the carbs at bottom behind baffles,it would not really fire but acted like it wanted to because it would spin the starter off.took out the plugs and they could be fouled but didn appear that badI am going to try new set of plugs,Any ideas next, with it running so good at first after sitting so long,it doesnt seem like it should be a hard thing to find the problem.i just love the boat even thru i only had it on the water running for 30 minents.i have read a lot of your replys to chrysler problems and only wished you lived close.so please give this problem some throught and let me know what i chould try next, before i have to take it to a marine shop.again thanks
