1976 9.9hp thermostat seal orientation

I'm looking for info on the direction of install for the thermostat seal - The Seal Part#: 0310058. There is a lip on one side of the seal. Is it suppose to be facing up towards the top of the thermostat or down? The seal I am removing is in such bad condition it is not evident which way it was oriented. There is also no written info or pictures in the service manual. Does anyone have a picture from a service manual and description for this? I have attached pictures
