Ok I just acquired a 1976 evinrude 85hp engine that runs great I just have a few questions though.
1. when I have the engine tilted just a little up to run the engine when I done I find a small amount of gas sitting in the engine compartment that obviously leaked out of the carb. Is this normal?
2. When I got this engine the carborater cover wasnt there and never was , is this okay? So im guessing it was just a plastic piece that went over the carbs that was removed and never put back on. Do I need it?
3.What is the best 2 stroke oil to run in the engine and also the ratio is 50;1 I assume right?

THANKS!

Re: 1976 85hp evinrude questions

hello!
I'll tell you the number one thing to go get is an OEM service manual. This will tell you what type of oil, will show you pictures and breakdowns of the motor, wiring diagrams, maintenance items, etc. Trust me, you'll need it IT will show you what you need for THIS MOTOR. eBay is a great source, or you could try this very site in the marine store section.
I have a 1978 85hp Johnson and my manual has been a life saver and a great educational peice for me. I found it on eBay- paid less than $40.

Re: 1976 85hp evinrude questions

Welcome to the forum. I also own a 85 HP engine. The ratio is 50:1.
If I tilt my engine, gas also runs out of the carbs.
Regarding the cover for the carbs, mine is a metal cover, with 4 rubber plugs in it. I think it serves to help block some noise, and possible protect in case of a backfire. Perhaps other real "experts" on this forum will confirm.
I think you can order the cover. If the engine runs good, it would probably be a good investment, as it may also help keep dirt out of the carbs and cylinders.

When you are done boating for the day and heading to dock, before you tilt up, you could disconnect the gas line at the tank(assume external tank) and let the motor run until it burns the fuel that's already in it. This would get rid of the fuel leaking out when you tilt it back up to trailer it. I have to do this on mine.

West Marine has some different options available for 2 stroke oil. Just about any TCW3 oil should work in the fuel.

I would not try to run it out of fuel as both carbs will not run out of fuel at the same time. The top usually runs out first and then you can score a cylinder running it without any oil to lubricate it. (expensive fix) It is somewhat normal to have a little fuel leak out, especially with older lines. New carb kits and lines may fix this.
