I have a 1976 merc 850 with the thunderbolt ignition. My problem, all of the sudden while out boating the motor died, didn't sputter just stopped and won't start. Played with it a bit, cleaned the spark plugs and it started, ran for about a minute, ran totally fine, and then suddenly died and won't start again.
It has a spark but seems pretty weak.
It getting fuel to the carbs, by priming and by the fuel pump.
What could this be? Stator? switchbox? mercury switch?
I am stumped, it seems like even a weak spark should at least fire now and then and wouldn't just shutoff all of the sudden.
