I just bought this motor and I have been so busy changing parts that I never realized I do not have a key for the control box. Can I get a replacement key from a John/rude dealer or am I going to have to get a whole new switch?

Look closely at the switch. There is usually a letter or a number on it.<br /><br />Your local John/Rude dealer can get keys. There aren't that many combinations.

And if they can't take the switch to a locksmith and he can file you one by hand in 2 min. There very easy to make

Assuming the locksmith has a blank he can make one. Although I would assume any good locksmith should. I had to get keys when I bought my boat. The johnny dealer charged my $7 a piece. OUCH  <br /><br /><br />How fun it is owning a hole in the water which to throw money in... ;)

Didn't realize it was a standard. The dealer conned me into believing that the only place I could get them was from OMC. OH well. I can start my boat now

Judah..... As DJ states, look at the immediate surrounding area where the key normally inserts. There will be a number there. What is that number?<br /><br />I, and I imagine many others here have an assortment of duplicate keys of which we could send you one. I can be reached at my address below should you wish to have a key sent.

A Evinrude dealer will have a full set of master keys of which one will fit your control box to determine the proper key #. They will either stock or order a replacement key. I know the process from past experience.

The key code on the lock itself can be used to make the key at the dealer or a locksmith that works with boats. i might still have my code book and could give you the cuts if you give us the code
