First question. I have about a 76 johnson 6 hp where i put in a new water pump but it still doesn't pump water. Pretty sure i got the water tube lined up and also the key placed correctly on the shaft of the water pump. Any ideas what to try before i take the lower leg off again. I had a heck of time getting it back together before, but hopefully will go easier the next time if i have to do it again. when i took the thermostat cover off, very little water was coming up to top of the block. I did blow out the water tube openings with water and air and they seemed to be clear.

second question. this motor will keep running but only if i keep squeezing the primer bulb. what does that mean as far as doing repair?

third question, I misplaced the thermostat cover, gasket and screws so if any one has a similar 6 hp where you selling parts please let me know. thermostat cover part number is oem 0312714. believe these parts are similar on 6 hp johnsons from 68-79. please respond to my email if possible at jake331@charter.net or on this site. I find this site full of information but hard to use and understand. took me a long time to even figure out how to post a new thread. thanks for any help you can give.

Did you smash the grommet on the water pump - the copper tube fit inside of it.... if it is worn or misaligned water will not pump.

Having to pump the bulb indicates a bad fuel pump. Take the fuel line that feeds the carb loose...attempt to start it, if fuel pulses out the pump is ok... if not rebuild or replace the fuel pump.

If you have an Evinrude dealer they should be able to get you a new cover, gasket and screws

1) Remove the lower unit and submerge it in water and spin the driveshaft with a drill, does water shoot out of the water pump? If so there is a grommet on the top of the water tube where it goes into the powerhead that could be distorted and restricting the water flow.
2) If you can keep it running by squeezing the primer bulb it usually means the fuel pump is not pumping fuel. Squeezing the primer bulb will bypass the fuel pump.
3) Look in the "Top Secret File", there is a list of salvage yards there, maybe one of them is close to you and can help you out.

where and how do i find this top secret file? thanks for our ideas. I'll work on it as i get some more time. it was a real headache to get the lower leg back on this motor. hopefully it will go easier the next time.
