Hi,
I am hoping someone out there can help. I rebuilt the carb in my 1976 25 hp johnson at the beginning of the season. It ran great. I have cleaned it since these symptoms have arrived so I know it's clean. Maybe my adjustments are off? When it starts it slowly gains RPM until it "Pop's" (backfires) when it does this it drops back to lower rpm than the process repeats itself. Rum, Rum, Rum - Pop! Rum, Rum, Rum - Pop! It does this for a while until it gets really warmed up than it shoots gas (slowly) out of the carb until it fills the motor cowling and begins to leak out onto the water? I am not sure what to do. When its warm, it starts great, but spews gas and if held at 2000-2500 RPM or higher for more than 5 seconds and will begin to backfire. When at wide open throttle it will gain and drop RPM's across the lake. Sometimes as much as 500+ and spew gas. It leaves you with the feeling that at any minute i am going to be paddling. Not a good feeling to have. Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated. Just trying to get it running well again. Thanks!

Re: 1976 25 hp Johnson Carb Troubles

there are 3 things which could cause this.
1/ the carb, mis-adjusted slow speed needle. float mis-adjusted, flooding the carb.

2/ flywheel woodruff key has sheared, throwing off the timing, just enough to cause problems.

3/ reed valves behind the carb are not sealing.

most of this is covered in the TOP SECRET FILE.
