I bought a 76 johnson 15hp outboard last fall, 15R76A, had a heck of a time starting it but it did start. I didn't do anything more to it but now I want to use it and would like it to start easier. Where do I start on a tune up? Thanks. I don't have a manual with it.

Do you know how long it sat before you got it? Look in the 'Top Secret Files' under 'Awakening a sleeping outboard'. At the very least you should clean the carb, replace the impeller/pump housing, inspect fuel lines, compression test it, and do a spark test. You'll know more after that.

The guy I bought it from said he used it in canada once a year, and from the condition of it I had to believe him because it is in excellent condition on the outside and under the hood. I will checkout the 'Top Secret Files'. thanks
