hello every one ,this is my first boat,to work on,now i put a used single lever control box on and when i push it forward it pulls it into reverse giving me full throttle reverse and pulling back puts it in forward gear with a quarter thottle.Do i need a dual control box or is something wrong with linkage? Does anybody have a picture of the type of control box i need? Thanks

Welcome aboard Stinger!

Are you sure you got the right control cable on the right place on the engine?

Disconnect both control cables. While watching the casing guides at the end of the control cables, just go to forward at the control box. Which ever control cable moves, that's the one to connect to the shift lever on the engine. The other, of course, goes to the throttle lever on the engine.

Hi Stinger700,
The regular control boxes will interchange, but the "correct" one for your motor would be the Johnson "Command Center" style. The Evinrude "Power Pilot" style would work as well. Both of these have the warm-up lever on the side behind the main throttle/shift handle. The newer style with the warm-up lever on top would work, too.
What I suspect has happened is your motor has had the lower unit replaced at some point with a later style mechanical shift 70/75hp gearfoot. It shifts backwards compared to what came on your motor originally, which was a hydro-mechanical shift. Assuming the skeg is still there and has never been welded you can tell them apart by looking at the angle of the rear edge of the skeg. If it is at a right angle to the propshaft, then it's probably the hydro-mechanical unit. If it is angled back under the prop a bit then it's probably the straight mechanical unit.
You can work around it by finding the shift lever/bellcrank off a later motor, or finding another h-m unit for it. H-m units were used from 1973 to 1976. Straight mechanical units that would fit your motor (with the modification of the upper bellcrank) would be from 1977 to 1985.
Hope that helps,
- Scott

hey chinewalker
looks like you know your stuff.Im only 17 and need a little bit of help .Yes, the lower unit has been replaced ,I have the bell crank hooked up but it binds when ever i shift .So whith the old linkage for the gear shift .Is the command center a side mont because I have the pilot style and would the cammand work with old linkage?

Stinger...if your trying to shift with out the engine running, spin the prop. What probably happening is the lobes on the clutch dog and gears aren't meshing. Spinning the prop will get them to mesh.

Re: 1975 stinger control box,witch one ?

I have the power pilot control box and the lower unit has been changed to the straight style mechanical shift. I have the bellcrank shift lever that bolts to the side of the engine(it is about 8-10 inches long and has connections on the bottom and the top; the bottom connects to the gear shift cable and the top connects to the mechanical shift lever inside the motor. this setup does shift it correctly but it binds when you apply full throttle in other words it does not work smoothly. I know that i must use the longer bell crank lever for it to work, but I dont know the proper way to connect the bellcrank to the shift lever inside the engine. I used a straight bar for the linkage but the geometry looks and moves in a binding way as if the bellcrank is to long. What do u think?

If i Delete the bell crank and go with the original shift setup which i still have ,would a dual lever control box work ,making the gear lever(forword or backwords )no difference and a greater output on forward when thottle is applied on the throttle lever. What do you think and if yes which one do you prefer ?

Stinger....I've attached the link to the BRP site where you can get a parts break down of your engine. Maybe it will help sort things out. Just click on engine diagrams and follow the prompts. When you find your engine list, that's the list that will give you gearcase, midsection, etc., click on cylinder and crankcase.

I might add that if that big bolt that holds the bell crank assemble together against the block is not inserted through both bell crank arms....like the shoulder of the bolt is not through the inner arm....this will cause binding.

Here's the link.

http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/
