Hey everyone, the 4 intakes on the lower unit with the screens on them have either broken or have holes in them. Is this something thats replaceable or what do I do? I already tried looking for replacement screens but no luck and i wouldnt even know how to replace them.
Thanks!

I am not sure on the 75 model..but others I have seen are just held on by a screw and are easily replaceable. but if you cannot find a replacement screen in the parts list.maybe they are not replaceable.

There is a screw right next to the screen but i just cant see how it would relate to the screens or how to take it out

Thanks so much! I never saw that before on the diagram, one is on the way.
How hard do you think the install of it will be? Would I have to remove alot of parts to just get down that far into the lower unit?

I've yet to replace mine. Just dropped the LU on my '79 - 85hp. I'm doing some work on the power head too, so getting a list together of all parts that need to be ordered. Let me know how your installation goes.

You will have to pull the complete water pump assembly off to get to the intake screen. If you don't know much about the history of the water pump (age) now is the time to consider replacing it as a preventative measure.

Heavy into the teardown now of the waterpump and everything and finally got to the intake screen but I cant seem to get it off at all it wont even budge even with all the screens busted out. Is there a bolt or screw or something im missing thats holding it in place? There is a hex shaped screw in on the outside of the lower unit but on the diagrams it says its a set screw. Im not sure what I should do now.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

That screw is the pinion bearing setscrew, don't remove it.

Re: 1975 Johnson 85hp intake screens

No problem. I took mine apart before ordering any parts. Was hoping that I would only need the impeller, but due to some wear on the impeller plate, I think that I'm going to go ahead order the WP kit... oh well.

I too have that problem on the impeller plate, im still deciding if I should order a new one or just emery it down and hope for he best. The kit is just so expensive. Next I gotta tackle the shift rod because im not sure if its at the right height or not and have no idea how or where to measure it.

Thank you very much for finding these items its making my first lower unit water pump rebuild so much easier for me.
As for adjusting the shift rod I thought when I took off the housing the shift rod sits in that I unscrewed the actual shift rod not just the top piece that screws back and forth easily, that made me much less nervous.

The intake screen is a whole nother problem on its own, i took out the long pliers and pulled on that screen until I actually started bending the pliers. I guess ill just have to chip it into little pieces.

Little pieces is the answer or else a Snap On pliers.

Re: 1975 Johnson 85hp intake screens

Got it busted out today glad to get that over with. Is the shift rod supposed to be stiff and have no wiggle in it, and also not be able to twist a little maybe? because mine feels like its a little loose but im not sure maybe thats how there supposed to be as it stills shifts up and down fine.
Thanks

As long as it shifts up and down with no effort it should be okay.

Re: 1975 Johnson 85hp intake screens

To manuelly push the rod down and pull it up to shift the keys takes a little effort , I mean its not just sliding up and down I gotta push and pull on it pretty hard for it to shift up and down
