I have a 1975 Johnson Stinger 75 hp. Yesterday I took it out fishing. Everything worked well as always after the last tune up. But when I try to restart it to change spot I couldn't get in to start. I had to paddle back to the launch. Fun times. Anyway, I have been looking at it. I'm no mechanic but I think I found the problem. It seems there is a spring connecting the gas link and choke link on the carbs either broken or disconnected. I just.cant figure out where it hooks up. If somebody with same engine could post a picture it would be great. I tried to manually open the choke and the engine started right away. I have picture. It can't post as I'm camping and only have my iPhone.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Fred!

Try shop.evinrude.com and look up the parts diagrams and you may get some ideas.

I did try that. I found the correct spring I think. But it doesn't really show where to hook it up.

I have the service manual....do you want me to post a pic for you from the manual? Or I can take a pic of my '77 75 Evinrude? Let me know.

Either would be great. The one that easier to see I guess. I'd love to be able to get it running before the end of vacation.

What exactly would you like to see in the vid I post for you? As soon as you reply, I'll run out in the garage and take a vid for you.

The area with the choke and throttle link on the carbs. There is a spring about in the middle that should connect the 2 links but I can't see where it need to go! I really appreciate you taking the time. I'm really stuck here!

The video is great. Thanks. The spring I am looking is the one just on top of the choke solenoid. It's hard to tell on the video but is it welded on the link or it's resting on something? I'll have to check mine in the am. Thanks again!

Looked at it again this morning. You're videos helped greatly! I figured out my problem is with the choke solenoid. The plunger is loose in it. So I guess I need a new one. But looking in the part catalogue it shows as obsolete. Does it mean I'm out of luck or it was replaced by another part?

My plunger was loose on my '74 Johnson...I just pushed it back in and it has worked great ever since. You should be able to manually set the choke on or off with the manual lever on the front of the engine...push it all the way in for choke off, pull it out for full choke (it's like like that on my '74 50 hp anyway)

The plunger won't stay in. Looks like a retaining ring went missing or something. I tied it with some wire for the time being. I'll look for the manual choke. Never did notice one before.

Re: 1975 Johnson 75 help

You can probably find a choke solenoid on ebay. If not, try placing a "Wanted" ad on CL(make sure to put the ad in the boats section NOT the "wanted" section)...I have lots of luck finding parts I need by doing this.
