Ok, I have no idea about boats but ran across this motor along with a 18ft bass boat for $150. I was told it needed some carberator work. I took it to a shop and told them this was my first boat and I just wanted him to check it and see what all issues it had with it considering the boat has been sitting for 2 or 3 years. Long story short he tried to screw me and tell me It wouldn't fire up and it needed a stator which would cost $400. When I got home I got some ear muffs and tried to start it myself and what do you know it fired up. Blue smoke was coming out of the propeller but I am told that is normal? Anyways before taking it to the lake I was going tO get new carberator kits and put a new water pump on it myself because right now I can't trust any boat repair man. I am told this is definately a must considering how long the boat has been sitting.

I guess my questions are

Is this a good motor when running?
How do you get to the water pump? I have all bolts out but there is a long shaft that is keeping me from pulling it off. How must I remove this?

I have also drained the oil to the gears and going to put new oil in tomorrow

What else would y'all recommend Doing before putting it on the water?

Those engines do smoke a lot-a common problem with 2 strokes. These older engines were great in their day. Lightweight and powerful for their size. 85 hp out of a 92 cubic inch block. OMC made them by the thousands in their heyday. Parts are still readily available for them. Good idea to change the water pump. The shift rod needs to be detached before the lower unit will slide out of the midsection. It disconnects on one end of the belcrank, just under the bottom carb in the lower cowling. You might want to consider changing the thermostat (single vernatherm) at the back, bottom of the powerhead-mounted on the exhaust adapter. Carb kits and internal carb cleaning is a good idea-esp if the engine has been sitting for a long period of time. Fuel tends to dry out in the carb passages and that can cause running issues.

Welcome to iboats.

STEP ONE Get the proper manual for your motor. Do not be frugal (cheap) and buy a real shop manual ......... it will pay for itself many times over.

The 85 is a great motor!!! Yes there are honest mechanics, dishonest ones and then there are also "parts re placers" that fall in the middle.

Re: 1975 evinrude 85 (please help!)

Thank y'all for your input. All is appreciated.

At this point I have the 6 bolts out at the lower unit.
And have started to remove the carberators to clean and put new carb kits on and to be able to get the drive shaft bar? ( I think that's what it's called) so i can finish removing the lower unit.

I have ordered the manual. Should be here soon.

Is cleaning and putting new carberator kits on and installing a water pump a job I can do without a manual? My brother has done carb work before and we were going to remove them today.

The carbs can be done without a manual ( did mine on my first motor last year)....but it would be a VERY good idea to read the top secret files located at the beginning of this forum. As far as the pump, read as much as you can, you can also find some good videos on you tube ( I watched the marine doctor). It's not difficult but you want to make sure you do it the right way.....

Read this it will help with the impellar http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=309188

Just a word of advice ......... do the impellar and do the carbs at separate times. If you do things together ..... you will miss something
