Took apart lower unit to re-seal it. While I was in the process, I decided to repaint it.
I stripped and masked to do a better job and there is one part that I removed that I am unsure of how to replace.
The part is referred to as the water bypass cover. It is a rectangular plate ~ 1/8" thick, and about 3" x 1" , has two screws to attach it and has, for lack of a better description, a pattern of "cheese-grater-like" serrations. These would cut in one direction.
In this application they would act as either scoops, or vents.

The OEM manual is not detailed enough to show this, and the on-line parts diagram is unclear as well. It is a 50/50 shot, and it may not make a significant difference.
But, there was obviously a reason that the part was made like this and I have no idea what that is.
Is anyone 100% sure of the correct orientation?

Thanks.

little scoops face the rear -- water inlet when operating in reverse. Like to see a pic of the detailing, Tim. I did one for a neighbor a couple of years ago, using vinyl decals found online -- came out looking good (imho).

Thanks for the info..
I could take a pic or 2, but I only painted the LU. Not a lot to see.
It is a pretty clean little motor and runs beautifully. I might at some point do a full aesthetic restore, but the upper is not bad enough for that yet.

Exploded view shows the little holes face forward and down...in other words, looking from the port side of the motor, the holes would be in the left, lower corner of the cover.

Go with the pic, Tim. (Went out and checked on a couple of mine -- My 5 1/2s have the scoops facing the prop -- 7 1/2 has them facing the other way. Not sure which is original, if any. Sorry.)

Was thinking I had seen something on this in Leeroy's Ramblings, and managed to locate some discussion here: http://www.leeroysramblings.com/OMC_6hp.htm . Little bit of a quandry.

Thanks for all the responses.
I wonder whether this really matters, but will reinstall as it was designed to be. :)

Are you running the Evinrude 6HP on your beautiful Orlando Clipper?

No. That is repowered with a Nissan 40 HP. Beautiful combination!
The Clipper is an amazingly well-designed and built craft. Too bad they are out of business.
