G'day all, i have a 1975 85 hp Evinrude, which has been a good old unit so far, but after i switched it off after running it on the muff's yesterday i noticed some smalll amounts of smoke coming from the two ports at the top of the leg just under the head. It didn't appear to be excessive and i thought it may be exhaust. Then i got to thinking that i dont know the last time it was serviced and for piece of mind i should change the gear-box oil. i was hoping that someone could tell me which kind of oil, where to fill it and any other routine leg maintenance i should take care of. I like to do my own maintenance on my equipment but due to the global economic downturn the purchase of a manual has been put back for a month. Thank's in advance!!!

Re: 1975 85hp gearbox oil

the plugs are on the starboard side of the lower unit. Straight Slot Screws.
the vent is just above the flat plate, the drain/fill is on the lower front side of the hub. do not mess with any Phillips head screws.

gear case oil should be changed every fall before the first freeze, this gives you an opportunity to see if there is water there,, and get it out before it freezes and crack the lower unit. always, change the seals on the drain and vent plug. use 80-90 outboard gearcase oil. remove the drain plug, and vent plug, while waiting for it to drain. put the new seal on the plugs. the new oil goes into the bottom hole, until it runs out the vent plug, install vent plug, then bottom plug. they make a pump to pump the oil into the bottom hole.

Thank's mate! Lucky for me we don't get a freeze in this part of Tasmania, but once a year sounds like a good idea. I am a light vehicle and plant mechanic, however outboards are new to me and quite a different science in many ways. Thank's again for great advice and assistance!!

And for the record, those two holes are the exhaust relief holes. They're basically exhaust bypass ports for when you're just sitting idling and there isn't enough exhaust pressure to properly push it through the prop.

Hi guys, I have the same motor, was looking at lower gear oil for outboards today and the bottle mentioned something about works in all outboards requiring G5, can someone tell me if I need some kind of special oil?
Thanks

If you have the same outboard, the info tash provided holds true for you as well. Get some High Viscosity outboard gear oil, it has additives to protect the lower unit incase you have water intrusion. Equally important is to change the washers as he mentioned.

On the older electric shift motors, Premium Blend Type C is needed for the electric shift, but that does not apply to you.

Just a helpfull word.
Those plugs can sometimes be a bugger to take out. Always use an impact screw driver and a whack with a hammer. No damage to the slots and out they come.
Good luck mate.

I always use OMC/BRP----"Hi Vis".

Get new fill and drain plugs seals while you're at it.

Re: 1975 85hp gearbox oil

GL-5 oil is supposed to pass L-42 referenced test which assesses the anti-scoring properties of gear lubricants under high speed and shock conditions using DANA model 44 hypoid rear axle. The important consideration for outboard gearcase oils is that they are designed to withstand the effect of water intrusion. Outboard gear oil is therefore considered superior to rear axle oil in this regard, and high viscosity outboard gear oil is the correct lubricant for your particular motor.

Happy holidays!
