1975 Evinrude 85HP and it won't trim up.

It's currently in the down position. When I push the trim
switch up/down (the trim motor spins) and it will move veeerry slightly up/down.

I hear the fluid is the easiest thing to check, but I have no idea how to get to it. I hear the fluid fill port is accessible only when the motor is all the way up, which is not the case for me.

Is there another way to manually move the motor up and/or check the fluid? Please excuse me if this is a pretty basic question, but I'm new to boating.

thanks,

jasper

I believe what you have is a tilt only. You can raise the motor by the release lever and manually lift it. However, some one who knows more than me will be along shortly to give you better advice than I can.

I have tilt and trim on my 1975 115 Johnson and I believe that it is the same unit that you have. The fluid fill is on the starboard side below the electric motor. The motor and the resivoir look like a one piece unit, but they do separate. Unless your motor and resivoir are turned out 180 degrees you should be able to access it with the motor up or down. If you can not there is a release/valve that will allow you to raise the motor and then check the fluid. By the way they made tilt only units as well as tilt and trim.

Thanks guys for the quick responses. I was able to raise the motor by disconnecting the fluid line from the lift cylinder. Yeh! Of course red fluid spilled on the garage floor. Maybe using the release valve would have been better, oh well.
I'll take another look to see if I can find the resivoir.
Also, I'll pick up some more fluid tomorrow and top off. Hopefully this solves my problem. If so, I may be able to take it to the lake this weekend for a final run. Thanks again.

OK, I took another look at the tilt/trim motor and reservoir. I'm a little confused now where to fill with fluid ?
I took a few pics so maybe you can help clear things up for me.
Would I fill at the connection to the lift cylinder, or at the screw on the side of the reservoir? Seems like spilling is un-avoidable?

The screw on the side of the resiviour, keep cycling it up and down until it is full and will not hold any more and then put on a new washer when you put the screw back in. The syspem is self bleeding so it will work the air out.

Re: 1975 85HP Evinrude won't trim up?

well, it turns out I have a leaky lift cylinder.
I assume I have to replace the seals.
Do I have to remove the cylinder to replace the seals?
Should I take it to a shop or try to repair my self?

thanks,
jasper

The only way I know to do them is to pull the cylinders off. You can rebuild them yourself or drop them off at a hydraulic shop.
