Well I purchased a used running 85hp evinrude last weekend. I finally got around to tinkering on it this week. I went ahead and checked compression(110+- on all 4), Checked spark but I don't have a spark tester, so I just pulled each plug and turned the engine over to see if there was spark on all 4 cylinders. All good there, so I went ahead and rebuilt the carbs since the engine had been sitting.

Yesterday I went ahead and put everything back together and hooked up the controls and fired it up. Took me a while to realize the choke wasn't closing all the way, but I did get it to fire up. Once I started it up it seemed to be idling high 1500-2000 rpm, and it also has a slight miss occasionally it sounds like. You can start it up then shut it off and start it again and it starts instantly. The throttle plates are all the way closed so I can't get any adjustment out of the cable.

Right now I'm thinking the first thing to do is check for a leak on the carb gaskets. Secondly once I can find a friend with a timing light I'd like to check the timing. Does anyone know of something simple I might be doing wrong??

Here is a picture of how I have the linkage.

An occasional miss at idle could be a fuel restriction in the idle passages of the carbs. Often referred to as a "lean sneeze." Seems like a cough. Not a spark issue, but a lean condition in the small idle passages. Only way to correct is to overhaul the carbs.
