1975 850 Shift shaft seal direction

1975 Mercury 850
What direction does the shift shaft seal go? upside down with the lip seal pointing up or with the flat side up and the lip seal pointing down. I just want to make sure i put it the correct way

My serv manual shows a pic of the seal on my 90 triple. It shows it inverted with the flat side toward the grease. This tells me it will release grease pressure if sufficient but resist water pressure causing water intrusion.

I took a pic. One is a side view to show what the seal in pressed into. The other is the way I think you mean that it needs to go. Thank you for your help. I just want to make sure it is the correct way. the seal is a different design than the one i'm replacing.
